The CISO's Checklist: Evaluating a Compliance Automation Platform
A 25-point checklist for security leaders evaluating compliance automation vendors — covering control coverage, integrations, GRC depth, pricing, and security of the platform itself.
Why Platform Selection Matters More Than You Think
The compliance automation platform you choose becomes your system of record for security controls, evidence, and audit history. Migrating from one platform to another is painful — every control mapping, every piece of evidence, every audit report history stays in the old platform. Choose carefully.
This checklist covers the dimensions that matter most based on what security leaders evaluate but often don't ask directly.
Control Coverage
☐ Does it cover all 9 SOC 2 Trust Services Criteria (CC1–CC9)? Not just the technical controls (CC5, CC6) but the operational ones: risk assessment (CC3), change management (CC8), vendor management (CC9), and monitoring activities (CC4).
☐ How deep are the AWS checks? "AWS integration" can mean checking 5 things or 60 things. Verify: does it check EKS secrets encryption? KMS key rotation? Lambda execution roles? Security group egress? WAF configuration?
☐ Are the checks read-only verified? Can you review the exact API calls the platform makes to your AWS account? Is there a published IAM policy for the cross-account role? Verify it before connecting.
☐ Does it cover your full stack? If you use GitLab (not GitHub), Okta (not just Entra ID), GCP (not just AWS), verify those integrations exist and are active — not "coming soon."
☐ Can you add custom controls? Your environment may have controls that don't exist in any standard library. Can you define custom checks? Add manual controls with custom evidence requirements?
GRC Completeness
☐ Risk register: Can you log, score, and track risks with treatment decisions and acceptance records?
☐ Incident management: Can you classify, investigate, and close incidents with full timeline and post-incident review?
☐ Change management: Is there an approval workflow for production changes? Does it enforce 4-eyes principle?
☐ Vendor management: Can you run vendor questionnaires, track subprocessors, and log vendor risk ratings?
☐ Employee security: Can you track background checks, policy acknowledgements, device enrollment, and security training completion?
☐ Access reviews: Can you run periodic access reviews for production systems with bulk decisions and evidence export?
☐ Pen test management: Can you upload pen test reports, track findings by severity, and record remediation evidence?
☐ Compliance calendar: Are all deadlines, access review periods, and audit windows trackable in one place?
Multi-Framework Support
☐ HIPAA: If you're in healthcare or process PHI, you need HIPAA controls mapped alongside SOC 2 — not a separate tool.
☐ ISO 27001: If you sell to European enterprise customers, ISO 27001 may be required. Does the platform map SOC 2 controls to ISO 27001 Annex A automatically?
☐ GDPR: For EU data subjects and any GDPR obligations — is there a framework checklist?
☐ Cross-framework mapping: One piece of evidence should be linkable to controls across multiple frameworks. Does the platform do this automatically?
Security of the Platform Itself
☐ Tenant isolation: Is your data isolated at the database level (not just application level)? Row-level security? Separate schemas?
☐ Encryption of credentials: Are integration credentials (OAuth tokens, API keys) encrypted at rest? Never exposed to the frontend?
☐ Audit log: Is there an immutable audit log of all logins, evidence access, and control changes?
☐ Role-based access control: Are roles enforced server-side on every API request? Can you configure custom roles?
☐ Does the vendor run SOC 2 on themselves? A compliance platform that doesn't maintain its own SOC 2 program is a red flag.
Evidence Quality and Auditor Experience
☐ Is evidence API-sourced and structured? Or are you uploading screenshots?
☐ Is there an auditor workspace? Can you grant your CPA firm read-only access to your evidence without emailing ZIP files?
☐ Is evidence tamper-evident? Can auditors verify evidence hasn't been modified after collection?
☐ CSV import: Can you import legacy evidence from before the platform deployment?
☐ Evidence health scoring: Does the platform tell you which evidence is stale before your auditor does?
Pricing Alignment
☐ Does the pricing model align with your actual risk surface? Per-seat pricing punishes team growth. Per-AWS-account pricing aligns with infrastructure risk.
☐ Is there a free trial with full feature access? No feature gating, no credit card required.
☐ Is there transparent pricing on the website? A vendor who won't publish prices requires a sales call for every evaluation — that's a time cost.
